First steps.

Right then, well here goes for my first post. Always hard to think of what to say in these moments, bit like meeting complete strangers at a party; and ‘breaking the ice’ isn’t quite so easy when you’re sitting at a computer… So perhaps I should mention a little about why I’ve decided to start blogging. For starters, everyone seems to be doing it – though I can hardly claim to slavishly follow the cybertrends set by cutting-edge techies in the USA (with the notable exception of Facebook) – and on the whole it seems to be a Good Thing, lonely paranoiacs aside. And my other reason, I suppose, is because it does look like the logical next step in the chain of communications liberalisation that started with the telegram and has given us emails, texts and wireless networking.

While I don’t think my blog is going to turn into one of those with a specific purpose or agenda – I hardly have the time or commitment for that – I do admire people like Iain Dale or Nick Robinson, or even Paul Fletcher at Euro 2008 at the moment, for how adeptly they’ve got to grips with it. So I will probably (to a degree unconsciously) end up echoing their style if not their content before too long… but either way, it looks like fun, and I hope you enjoy reading it!
